Can Claude AI Edit an HTML Website? What Actually Works

You’ve got a website that works. It’s HTML, maybe with a bit of PHP holding the header and footer together, and nobody has touched the code in a couple of years. Now the phone number has changed, the menu is broken on mobile, and there’s a page from 2023 that still says “coming soon”.

You’ve probably already tried pasting a page into Claude and asking it to fix something. It works. Then you realise the menu is in every page, and you’re about to do this twelve times.

Short answer to the question in the title: yes, Claude can edit an existing HTML website directly. It just needs a safe way to reach your files.

The copy-paste problem

A website isn’t one file. The navigation sits in every page. One stylesheet affects all of them. A broken link could be anywhere. When Claude only sees what you paste in, it can’t check the other pages, can’t search for every place your old phone number appears, and can’t save anything. You end up doing the tedious half of the job yourself.

What Claude needs to reach your site

Claude connects to outside tools through custom connectors, which use a standard called MCP. For a website, the connector is a small program on your hosting that gives Claude a short list of things it’s allowed to do: list files, read one, edit one, search the site.

Here’s the catch people miss: your hosting has to run PHP, because the connector itself is a PHP file. Ordinary shared hosting, Hostinger or any cPanel host, is perfect. A purely static host, like GitHub Pages, can’t run it.

Where it’s genuinely good

The jobs Claude does well on an HTML site are the fiddly, repetitive ones:

  • Fixing the same menu or footer across every page in one go
  • Tracking down every place an old price, address or phone number appears
  • Making a layout behave on mobile by adjusting the CSS
  • Creating a new page that matches the style of an existing one
  • Tidying up titles and meta descriptions for search
  • Finding internal links that point nowhere

What a small fix looks like

Say you type: “The Contact link is missing from the mobile menu. Fix it on every page.”

Claude searches the site for the menu code, opens the files it finds, and changes only the lines that need it. Before saving each file, it puts a copy of the old one in a _trash folder. Then it can load the live pages to check they still return properly, and tells you exactly which files it touched.

That last bit matters. You should always know what changed.

Where it still needs you

It’s not magic, and it’s worth being honest about that.

Vague requests get vague results. “Make it look more modern” will get you something, but “make the headings bigger and add more space between sections” will get you what you actually wanted. It also doesn’t know your business. If a price on the site is wrong, it will happily update it, but only if you tell it the right one.

And keep your own backup before big changes. The _trash folder is a safety net, not a backup plan.

Setting it up

We built Claude Bridge so you don’t have to write the connector yourself. The short version:

  1. Generate your file with the Custom PHP generator. It works for HTML sites on PHP hosting too.
  2. Upload that one file to public_html.
  3. In Claude, go to Settings, Connectors, Add custom connector, and paste the URL.

The full walkthrough is in our guide on connecting Claude AI to a custom PHP website. There’s a free 7-day trial, and paid plans start at $19 per website per year.
