No PHP, shell or file-editing tools. The public edition only reads and changes WordPress content through core APIs, with previews, confirmations and recovery snapshots. Keep normal backups before you allow changes.

Connect Claude to WordPress in five steps

Use Claude's custom connector, or any MCP client that supports Streamable HTTP with a custom Authorization header.

Install the plugin

Download the ZIP above. In WordPress go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, choose the ZIP and activate it.

Open SPD MCP

Find SPD MCP in the admin menu and copy the endpoint from the Connect tab.

Add it to Claude

In Claude open Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector and paste the endpoint. Approve the connection on the WordPress screen that opens. Your site needs HTTPS.

Or use a connection key

For other clients, create a key, then use Transport: Streamable HTTP, the copied URL and the header Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY. The full key is shown once.

Allow changes when ready

Everything starts read-only. Turn off Read-only mode in Controls when you want to commit changes you have reviewed.

Short answers about the free WordPress MCP plugin.

Is it really free?

Yes. SPD MCP is released under GPL-2.0-or-later. All tools are included. There is no license key, trial period or paid tier.

Does it work with Claude's Add custom connector?

Yes. Paste the endpoint URL in Claude and approve the connection on a WordPress screen where you choose the permissions. Access can be revoked under SPD MCP → Connect. Your site needs HTTPS and must serve /.well-known/ URLs through WordPress, which is the default on most hosts.

Can the AI change my site without asking?

No. Read-only mode is on by default, every change is previewed first, and a commit needs a short-lived token for those exact arguments. Changes to live content also need your explicit approval.

Does it include PHP, shell or file-editing tools?

No. The public edition only reads and changes WordPress content through core APIs, with previews, confirmations and recovery snapshots.

Are snapshots a full backup?

No. They cover only the content fields, media text, SEO fields and products the tools changed. Keep your normal site backups.

What happens to my data if I delete the plugin?

Nothing is removed by default. To delete settings, keys, snapshots and the activity log, add define('SPDMCP_DELETE_DATA_ON_UNINSTALL', true); to wp-config.php before deleting the plugin.

How is this different from PHP AI Bridge?

PHP AI Bridge is a paid generator for custom PHP and HTML sites (and a simple WordPress connector). SPD MCP is a free, standalone WordPress plugin with change previews, page building and recovery snapshots.
